How do I care for my baby’s teeth?

Babies lack teeth for a few months after they are born. The front row teeth start to appear after 6 months. But oral hygiene and care of your baby’s mouth is important even when they are devoid of teeth. Although they do not eat any solid food consumption of breast milk, formula milk, or baby food can cause their oral hygiene to get hampered. Thus, the mouth of an infant must be cleaned with the help of a damp washcloth. Baby toothbrushes are commonly used to clean the gums.

When the child starts to grow teeth, they should be taken care of to avoid infection and other dental issues. Dental care routine followed by patients for kids should be as follows:

The teeth of an infant should be properly washed with the help of a baby toothbrush. Baby toothbrushes are specially designed with soft bristles

Parents should use only a tiny amount of toothpaste to brush the teeth of infants

When babies start eating solid food and have full-grown teeth, floss can be used with soft hands to pull out the food particles stuck between the teeth

When kids have grown quite older, parents must teach them to rinse their mouth properly while brushing. They should be taught how to spit the foam of the toothpaste otherwise they are likely to swallow it

Babies can also develop tooth decay if bacteria invade their oral cavity. The common practice of putting your baby to sleep with the feeding bottle latched to their mouth can be harmful. The sugar in the liquid food accumulates around the teeth for hours and eventually erodes the enamel. This condition is known as baby bottle tooth decay. It leads to discoloration of the teeth. The teeth might get poked, pitted and in severe cases cavity may develop
