Easy ways to choose the best nasal aspirator for your baby


A stuffy or runny nose causes great discomfort to adults and it’s the same for babies too, or even more. It’s hard to breathe you have a blocked nose and babies have a hard time as they cannot even blow their nose like adults. Hence, nasal aspirators are a great device to have in the medical kit for your baby. Read on to know more about how to use nasal aspirator on the baby.

What is a nasal aspirator?

Nasal or nose aspirator is a device that sucks out mucous from the baby’s nose. It’s small and handy and an easy way to clear up airways for the baby to breathe comfortably when it suffers from a cold. The mucous is collected and through suction and stored in a separate compartment in the device. Nasal aspirator is safe, cost-effective and very hygienic as well.  There are several designs and types in this as well and you can choose from a wide range for your infant. 

The different kinds

Bulb nasal aspirator

This is the most common one and used widely by parents and in hospitals. This device is also cost-effective but it’s a little difficult to clean it after it’s used. You have to ensure that there is no trace of mucous after use. Also, it’s a little difficult to dry this kind of aspirator. So, after repeated use, the interior does gets dirty.  

Electric nasal aspirators

Powered by electricity, these aspirators offer a more stronger suction than manual ones. You can even clean many of the model in a dish washer. These also have transparent storage so you can view the quantity of mucous extracted. These fare much better than manual ones and parents tend to prefer them. These are expensive and some areas that are hard to clean may also see a build-up of mucous. You may have erratic results based on the charge of the batteries and the power supply.  

Human suction nasal aspirators

In these, you suck the mucous out yourself manually in this kind of aspirators. There is a mouthpiece and filter towards the end of the tube to help you do that. It’s a simple device and also cost-effective and easy to clean. Also, you have more control over the suction in this device. Here, mucous is prevented from accidentally being sucked up the tube because of the filter and mouthguard. You should clean it thoroughly though after use.   

Steps to use a nasal aspirator

Though easy to use and maintain, it’s good to know how to use nasal aspirator on the baby for best results.

  1. )      Firstly, you need to get a saline solution ready. Saline solution makes it easier to extract the mucous. You can either buy one from the chemist or prepare it yourself at home. Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and your solution is ready. It’s better to make a fresh solution every day.     
  2. )      Next, place the baby gently on the blanket and squirt a couple of drops in the baby’s nostrils. This will make it easy to extract the mucous.
  3. )      If you are using a bulb model, squeeze the air out first keep it squeezed. Then, gently place this squeezed bulb into the baby’s nostril gently. Then, release the air back into the bulb which will suck out the mucous from the nose and into the bulb.
  4. )      Then, keep tissues ready and squeeze the mucous out of the bulb on the tissue.
  5. )      Repeat this process for the other nostril and then wipe the baby’s nose gently with a fresh tissue.

Do remember to keep the process limited to 3-4 times a day to avoid any irritation to the baby. Also, if your baby looks pale or if you do not see a difference in the breathing of the infant, do consult the doctor immediately. Using a nasal aspirator on the baby is quite simple and harmless if you follow steps mentioned above.
